OT 632: Praying the Psalms: A Shared Journey

How do we pray honestly? Where might we find language to express the struggles and joys of our faith to our loving, listening God? In this class students will take a praying journey through the Psalms. As they do, they will explore some of the many ways the Psalms have been prayer guides for the faithful throughout the history of the Church, up to the present day. And finally, students will learn how to integrate the Psalms meaningfully and practically into their ongoing discipline of prayer. (Fall 2009; residential/online; 3 hours)

OT 636: The Book of Daniel and Related Literature

This course interacts with the book of Daniel in its historical and literary context.  Topics covered include; date, authorship and historical setting, literary genre(s) and structure, its significance within Jewish apocalyptic literature, its relationship to early Christian writings, and extra-canonical additions to Daniel. (Fall 2006; online; 3 hours)

BI 432: Cracking the DaVinci Code: When Fiction and History Collide

In the best-selling historical-fiction novel and now major motion picture The Da Vinci Code, author Dan Brown proposes that Christian theology is largely the product of an elaborate conspiracy to hide “the truth” that had been suppressed by religious and political authorities. The course critically explores this theory as well as questions of the canonical and extra-canonical gospel tradition, the relationship between Jesus and Mary Magdalene, the formation of the Christian canon, and others (Spring 2006; Online Course, 3 hours).
